It is an integral part of the Department of Nephrology and Dialysis, the only in the country in diagnosing and treating kidney diseases in children. Among the unique services offered here are: children’s hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, initial preparation of children and parents for kidney transplants, post-transplant follow-up, etc.

4. DEPARTMENT OF RHEUMATOLOGY AND CARDIOLOGY

The main activities of the Department are directed to diagnosis and treatment of children with systemic connective tissue diseases, inflammatory joint diseases, rare rheumatologic conditions as well as patients suffering from unclear fever conditions. Moreover, children with thalassemia from all over Bulgaria have been treated here – the Thalassemia Center has been treating young patients for more than 17 years now.

5. DEPARTMENT OF GASTROENTEROLOGY

This is the only place in Bulgaria providing specialized diagnosis and treatment to children with chronic diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and liver. We are the only children’s hospital in Bulgaria providing contemporary liver Doppler Ultrasonographic and FibroScan examinations.

6. DEPARTMENT OF ENDOCRINOLOGY, DIABETES AND CLINICAL GENETICS

Children suffering from diabetes are being cared by exclusively well-trained endocrinologists and diabetologists. Children’s diabetes is treated using the most advanced products including insulin pumps and glucose sensors, a suitable and child-friendly way of treatment. Using these devices, blood sugar levels are closely monitored and measures as accurately as possible in very short time intervals – since this is of extreme importance when treating young patients. All pediatricians conduct training sessions to families of a diabetes patient – aiming not only to overcome the emotional tension and fear of the diagnosis, but also to ensure adequate childcare outside the hospital walls.

7. DEPARTMENT OF NEUROLOGY

It performs diagnosis and treatment of neurologically sick children from across the country by providing highly specialized examinations, among others: electroencephalography (EEG), electromyography (EMG), transfontanellar ultrasound.

8. DIAGNOSTIC OUTPATIENT UNIT

The Hospital is equipped with the latest device reading full hematologic tests, specially designed for children – allowing quick identification of diagnosis by being least painful for them. In addition, there is a children’s Medical Center providing follow-up care to outpatient children by physicians in all specialties of Pediatrics. Besides the hospital staff, there are animators (clown doctors) doing their best to ease the hospital stay of the inpatient children. Songs, drawing, theatrical plays and mobile libraries create a closer-to-home atmosphere for these young patients helping them cope with the hospital environment.
